Glasgow 2014

Seychelles competed in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23 to August 3, 2014 with 35 athletes. It was the biggest ever delegation to the Commonwealth Games and they took part in a record of nine sports.

Athletics

Neddy Marie managed a 4th place finished as he clocked a personal best time of 21.78 in the 200m heat. He also competed in the men’s 100m heat where he finishes 6th out of 7 competitors with a time of 11.34 seconds.

Dean William was involved in the shot put qualification group B, and his best effort was measured at 12.89 metres in his first attempt. He finished in 10th place and did not qualify for the final.
William also competed in the hammer throw event where he finished 10th with a throw of 47.18 metres measured in his third attempt. Mark Dry of Scotland had the longest throw with a distance of 71.62m. In discus throw he could only finish ninth as well where he threw the object over a distance of 42.44m for a new personal best.

Leeroy Henriette competed in the 200m heat where he finishes 6th with a season’s best time of 21.75 seconds. In the 100m heat he finishes 8th out of 9 competitors with atime of 11.12 seconds.

Lissa Labiche finished ninth with a height of 1.71m in the group A qualifiers. England’s Isabel Pooley clinched the group with a height of 1.85m.

Joanne Loutoy could only finished seven out of eight competitors with a time of 12.16 seconds in the 100m women`s heat. Canadian Khamica Bingham finished first with a time of 11.44 seconds and she then clocked 25.85 seconds in the 200m race.

Andy Labrosse finished in sixth place with a time of 18.76 seconds in the 100m (T37) event.
Jean-Paul Juliette managed a sixth place finish, crossing the finish line in 24.03 seconds in the 100m (T37) event.

Badminton
Juliette Ah-Wan: Ah-Wan lost 1-2 to Pakistani P. Bashir in the women’s single round of 64.
They then lost 0-2 to Malaysia in the Women’s Doubles Round.
In the mixed Doubles Rounds Ah-Wan lost to Northern Ireland on a score of 1-2.

Allisen Camille: Lost to Mauritian Y. Louison on a score of 1-2.
In the Women’s Doubles Round they lost 0-2 to Malaysia. Camille then lost 0-2 to Jamaica in the Mixed Doubles Round.

Georgie Cupidon: In the Men’s singles Round Cupidon lost 0-2 to Singaporean D. Wong
He then played against Australia where he lost 0-2 in the Men’s Double Round and lost again in the Mixed Doubles Round with a score of 1-2 to Northern Ireland.

Kervin Ghislain: Lost 0-2 to Northern Ireland in the Men’s Singles Round.

Steve Malcouzanne: Lost 2-0 to Australian J. Tho in the Men’s Singles Round.
In the Men’s Double Round Malcouzanne lost 0-2 to Australia.
He then lost 0-2 to Jamaica in the Mixed Doubles Round.

Boxing
Keddy Agnes lost his round of 16 +91kg fight on points – 0-3 – to England’s Joyce Joseph.

Andrique Allisop carried a lot of Seychelles’ hope for a medal on his shoulders as he went into the ring for his 60kg bout. His opponent was Cobia Breedy from Barbados and he proved to be too strong for the young Seychellois fighter. Allisop lost the fight on a 0-3 score.

Cycling
Antoine Arrisol: Clocked a time of 01:09.9 in the Men’s Individual Time Trial.

Chris Germain:

Edward Pothin: Clocked a time 01:27.2 in the Men’s Individual Time Trial.

Judo
Dominic Dugasse (-100kg) he lost by ippon against Scotland’s Euan Burton in the -100kg category. Dugasse had earlier defeated Northern Ireland’s Mark Montgomery by ippon.

Naddy Jeanne (-73kg) lost in the round of 16 to Northern Ireland’s Eoin Fleming. Jeanne had won his earlier bout by ippon against Gervas Leonard Chilipweli of Tanzania.

Leslie Philoe (-81kg) Lost by Ippon to New Zealand M. Brewer.

Brigitte Rose (-78kg) was competing in the -78kg class and managed some good performances earlier before losing to eventual silver medalist Gemma Gibbons of England in the quarterfinals. This meant she now had to compete for the bronze medal, but she lost to Canadian Ana Laura Portuondo by ippon in less than 15 seconds.

Squash

Eva Alphonse lost in the consolation plate quarterfinals to Dorothy Boyce of Papua New Guinea. The final score was 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, and 11-4), a performance that though was not good enough would have been quite encouraging for Alphonse.

Ridvan Prosper lost his round of 32 match in the plate competition on a 3-0 (11-2, 11-3, 11-2) score against Welshman Scott Fitzgerald. This defeat meant he had to compete in the consolation plate tournament. And in the round of 16 of the consolation plate, he lost to Gibraltar’s Christian Navas on a 3-0 (11-2, 11-4, 11-2) score.

Swimming

Dean Hoffman clocked 25.78 seconds in the 50m freestyle; 58.07 seconds in the 100m freestyle; 2:14.60 in the 200m freestyle; 30.87 seconds in the 50m backstroke and a time of 1:09.60 in the 100m backstroke event.

Felicity Passon clocked a time of 27.52 seconds in 50m freestyle; 1:00.15 in 100m freestyle; 32.74 seconds in 50m backstroke; 28.95 seconds in 50m butterfly and a time of 1:04.81 in the 100m butterfly event.

Adam Viktora clocked 25.13 seconds in the 50m freestyle; 55.10 seconds in 100m freestyle; 2:04.65 in 200m freestyle; 26.86 seconds in 50m butterfly and a time of 1:01.13 in the 100m butterfly event.

Table Tennis
Anniesa Benstrong lost 1-4 to welsh M. Phillips in the Women’s single. In the women’s doubles second round Benstrong lost 0-3 again to Wales. She then lost 1-3 in the mixed doubles second round to England.

Nicholas Esther lost to Trinidad and Tobago in the Men’s Singles on a point of 0-4; he then competed in the Men’s Doubles where he lost 2-3 to Malaysia in the first round. In the Mixed Doubles he lost 0-3 to Malaysia in the second round.

Dario Laurence lost 0-4 to Sri Lankan U. Ranasingha in the Men’s Singles. In the Men’s Team Classification he lost 0-3 to Trinidad and Tobago in the first round.

Laura Sinon lost 0-4 to Kenyan D.M. Njani in the Women’s Singles, in the same event she lost 0-4 to Malaysian Ho Ying. In the Women’s Doubles she lost 0-3 to Wales in the second round. She then lost 0-3 to Malaysia in the second round of Mixed Doubles.

Godfrey Sultan lost 0-4 to Malaysian Ashraf in the Men’s Singles, then lost 2-3 again to Malaysia in Men’s Doubles First Round. In the Men’s Team Classification First Round they lost 2-3 to Trinidad&Tobago and in the Men’s Team they lost 0-3 to Sri Lanka.
He also competed in the Mixed Double where he lost 1-3 to England in the second round.

Weightlifting

Clementina Agricole (58kg) managed to lift 88kg in the snatch event before going on to lift 111kg in clean & jerk for an Olympic total of 199kg, which was just 3kg less than the total achieved by third-placed Michaela Breeze of Wales. The gold medal went to England’s Zoe Smith who lifted a total of 210kg for a new Commonwealth Games record.

Ruby Malvina (58kg) managed to lift 75kg in snatch and 95kg in clean & jerk for a total of 170kg, which was good enough for a 10th place finish.

Rick Confiance (62kg) snatches 106kg and then Clean & Jerk 125kg.

Terence Dixie (85kg) managed to finish fourth in the men’s 85kg group B. He finished with a total lift of 267kg (122kg in snatch, and 145kg in clean & jerk).

Janet Georges (60kg) Commonwealth Games medalist lifted a total of 180kg (85kg in snatch and 95kg in clean & jerk) to finish in third place in the women’s 69kg group B.
