At the 14th Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand, (January 24 to February 3, 1990), the Seychelles team returned empty-handed. In athletics, Giovanni fanny brought his national 400m hurdles record to 52.85 seconds, Phillip Sinon reduced his 800m mark to 1 minute 53.17 seconds and Joseph Adam lowered his 400m flat record to 48.08 seconds.
The other Seychellois athletes in Auckland were triple jumper Paul Nioze (16.25m for eighth place) in the final. The 4 x 400m relay team of Percy Laramé, Giovanni Fanny, Joseph Adam and Philip Sinon clocked three minutes 18.57 seconds to finish fifth in heat number one and came out last in the final, clocking 3:18.22.
In the 200m, Adam qualified for the second round by clocking 22.31 seconds in the second heat of the first round. He clocked 22.17 seconds in the second round. Percy Laramé clocked 22.51 seconds in the same 200m first round heat.
In the 100m, Laramé clocked 11.25 seconds to finish last in his heat.
Of the five boxers, Rival Cadeau (now Payet) was the most outstanding member of the Seychelles team. He lost unfairly (1-4) to British Richard Woodhall, bronze medallist at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea, in the second round of the light middleweight (71kg) category after drawing a bye in the first round.
Jerry Legras (60kg) lost on points to Australian Justin Rowsell, Mathew Esparon (67kg) lost by Referee Stopped Content (RSC) in 1 minute 49 seconds into the first round to Zambian Anthony Mwanda in the first round, Olderick Esparon (91kg) lost on points in the first round to Canadian Robert Brown and Jeffrey Bonne (63.5kg) was beaten on points by Uganda Godfrey Wakabu.
In Judo, Bernard Marcel lost to Scottish G. Cameron in the 60kg division and Desire Wong was beaten by E. Ionnon of Cyprus
