Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Seychellois athletes enter into action tomorrow

Seychellois boxer Andrique Allisop will meet Irish Oliver David Joyce in his first round fight at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Drawn in the bottom half of the men’s light weight (60kg) draw, Allisop, who booked his ticket to Rio by winning the bronze medal at the International Boxing Association (Aiba) African Continental Olympic qualifying event in Yaoundé, Cameroon in March, will cross swords with Joyce tomorrow at the Riocentro Pavillion 6.
A win against Joyce will see Allisop move to the second round where he will meet number two seed Albert Selimov of Azerbaijan who won a bye.
There are 28 boxers in this category and the number one seed is Cuban Jorge Lazaro Alvarez.
The Games started yesterday with the opening ceremony punctuated by the traditional parade of nations during which Laser sailor Rodney Govinden proudly carried the Seychelles flag.
Female swimmer Alexus Laird will also be in action tomorrow in the 100m backstroke at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium.
As for male swimmer Adam Vitoria he will take the start of the 50m freestyle race on Thursday August 11.
On Monday August 8, male weightlifter Rick Confiance will be in action at the Riocentro Pavillion 2, while Laser sailor Rodney Govinden and windsurfer Jean-Marc Gardette will take part in their first races at the Copacabana Marina da Gloria.
If Govinden will race for six days, Gardette will be in action for five days.
Coming at the Olympic Games for the fifth time, Allan Julie will line up in the Finn class for the first time on Tuesday August 9 at the Copacabana Marina da Gloria. He will race for six days and have three reserve days.
The final day of the different sailing classes is Wednesday August 17.
Judoka Dominic Dugasse is expected to fight on the mat in the -100kg weight class on Thursday August 11.
In track and field athletics, young Ned Azemia is slated to run the 400m hurdles on Monday August 15 while female high jumper Lissa Labiche will compete on Thursday August 18.
Reigning Sportswoman of the Year Labiche is in fact the last Seychellois athlete expected in action at the Games.
Sports enthusiasts can follow the action on Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) TV every day. There will be live broadcast from 10.30pm to 3am and rebroadcast as from 3pm.
The XXVI Olympiad will end on Sunday August 21 with the closing ceremony.
